Norte Fire Report — October 17, 2026
Evacuation orders active for San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente neighborhoods
The Norte Fire is burning in brush from San Clemente into neighboring San Juan Capistrano after igniting near Portico Del Norte and Eminencia Del Norte. Driven by fierce Santa Ana winds, the blaze pushed into hillside communities where crews are working to build and reinforce containment lines. Active flanking and short-range spotting continue to threaten residential hillside areas.
Evacuations and Closures
- October 17: Mandatory evacuation orders are in effect for San Juan Capistrano zones SJC04, SJC05, and SJC10, as well as San Clemente zones SCL12 and SCL13.
- October 17: The Ortega Highway onramp to southbound Interstate 5 is closed due to dense smoke and heavy evacuation congestion.
- October 16: An overnight evacuation shelter accepting pets is open at the Boys and Girls Club at 1 Via Positiva in San Juan Capistrano.
- October 16: Daytime care and reception centers are open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center on Camino del Avion and the San Clemente Community Center on Calle Seville.
- October 16: Emergency animal shelters are open at Orange County Animal Care on Victory Road in Tustin and the CASA animal shelter on Avenida Fabricante in San Clemente.

Impact
Homes along Via La Mirada, Avenida Calita, and Via De Agua sustained damage or were destroyed as flames pushed into hillside neighborhoods. Two firefighters were hospitalized on October 16 with heat exhaustion and injuries, with both in stable condition and one discharged. Local electrical outages struck the fire area, prompting requests for voluntary water conservation to maintain firefighting pressure, while smoke reduced air quality to unhealthy levels for sensitive groups.
Conditions and Outlook
A Red Flag Warning remains in effect across the region through Saturday evening, after which winds are forecast to ease and transition toward cooler onshore flow with steadily recovering humidity and no rain. Firefighters are prioritizing containment line construction to halt spread against short-range spotting and active flanking in dry brush. Milder weather into early next week is expected to assist crews in holding and securing established perimeters.
Cause and Context
The cause of the fire remains under official investigation as of October 17. The state has secured a federal Fire Management Assistance Grant through FEMA to support ongoing suppression and emergency response operations.
Official updates current through October 17, 2026.
