Rain moderates fire activity as crews focus on mop-up and repair

The Bobcat Lakes Fire is burning in heavy timber east of Wisdom within the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Widespread precipitation and cooler weather have moderated fire activity to creeping and smoldering as crews strengthen perimeter lines and begin repair work. Area structures and regional communication infrastructure remain threatened in the fire's vicinity.

Evacuations and Closures

• The Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway remains closed due to fire suppression operations and heavy equipment activity (September 4).
• A Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest closure order remains in effect across portions of the Wisdom and Dillon Ranger Districts (September 4).

Impact

Smoke has settled overnight into the Big Hole Valley, periodically reducing morning air quality. No damaged or destroyed structures have been reported.

Conditions and Outlook

Cooler conditions with gusty winds shifting from south-southwest to west will bring chances of wetting rain and drizzle over the coming days. Subdued fire behavior is expected to persist, allowing crews to patrol and monitor established lines along the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway while conducting suppression repairs and chipping operations.

Cause and Context

The fire was determined to have been caused by lightning on September 2. It is being managed alongside the adjacent Sand Creek Fire under Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 1.
