Area closure lifted as rain and natural barriers stall fire growth

The fire is smoldering in heavy timber on steep slopes near Silvertip Mountain in the Spotted Bear Ranger District, southeast of the Spotted Bear Ranger Station. Activity over the last several days has been minimal, with natural limestone cliffs and recent rainfall preventing movement along the southern flank. The fire poses no threat to nearby communities or private property.

Evacuations and Closures

• No evacuation orders or warnings are in effect as of September 9, 2026.
• Trail closures remain in effect as of September 5, 2026, for Silvertip Creek Trail 89 and Limestone Peak Trail 435.
• The broad Silvertip Area Closure was lifted on September 5, 2026.

Conditions and Outlook

Breezy west to southwesterly winds will continue before heavy rain arrives late in the week, bringing cooler temperatures and high humidity. Firefighters expect no perimeter growth under these fall conditions and will continue monitoring activity from lookouts on Green Mountain while opening trail access.

Cause and Context

Lightning started the fire on July 24, 2026. The Flathead National Forest issued its final scheduled update on September 6, 2026, as natural terrain barriers and seasonal precipitation keep the fire in check.
