Frijoles Fire Report — September 4, 2026
Suppression repair underway as smoldering fire holds within perimeter
The Frijoles Fire is burning in steep, timbered terrain within the Santa Fe National Forest, located west of Sierra Mosca and southeast of Cundiyo. Over the last 72 hours, fire activity has remained minimal and confined to creeping and smoldering in interior fuels following recent rain. The fire presents no immediate threat to nearby communities or property today.
Evacuations and Closures
- All evacuation preparedness levels across Santa Fe and Rio Arriba counties were lifted on September 1, leaving no active evacuation orders or warnings in effect.
- New Mexico State Road 503 reopened to regular traffic on September 1.
- Forest Road 306 remains closed from its junction with Forest Road 440 west to the forest boundary as of September 4.
- A Santa Fe National Forest area closure remains in effect for the Pecos Wilderness within the Española Ranger District as of September 4.
- The public is asked to avoid Santa Cruz Overlook Road and Campground to support operations as of September 4.
- A Temporary Flight Restriction remains in place over the fire area as of September 4.
Impact
No structural damage or injuries have been reported. Smoke remains largely confined to the burn area, keeping air quality generally good across Santa Fe and Española, with occasional light smoke drifting into Nambé and Mora from regional sources.
Conditions and Outlook
Warm, dry weather will shift toward cooler conditions, increasing humidity, and a chance of showers by the weekend and early next week, accompanied by light southwesterly winds. Fire behavior is expected to stay minimal, limited to creeping and smoldering in interior timber. Crews plan to continue suppression repair on the northeastern flank, maintain patrols along the eastern perimeter, and monitor uncontained steep terrain by air.
Cause and Context
The fire was sparked by lightning in early August. It continues to burn in steep, rugged wilderness terrain that restricts safe ground access along portions of the eastern flank.
