Forward progress stopped northeast of Cherokee as crews secure lines

The Kurk Fire is burning northeast of Cherokee between Highway 16 and FM 1031 near County Road 417 in San Saba County. After igniting on September 8, the fire spread rapidly through dry grass and dense juniper stands before crews stopped its forward movement late that evening. Firefighters remain engaged on the perimeter to protect structures in and around the nearby Rocky Hollow subdivision.
