GARDA FALLS Fire Report — October 21, 2026
Active wilderness fire prompts trail closures across northern Mount Rainier
The Garda Falls Fire is burning in Mount Rainier National Park wilderness, actively pushing up a ridge toward sparse ridgetop fuels with potential to back into the West Fork drainage. Over the last 72 hours, the fire expanded uphill and generated visible smoke columns along the mountain's northern slopes. The blaze burns entirely in remote backcountry and does not threaten populated areas or structures.
Evacuations and Closures
- Sunrise Road remains closed to private vehicular traffic for the season, though pedestrian and bicycle access is permitted (October 19, 2026).
- The Wonderland Trail is closed between the Carbon River Suspension Bridge and White River Campground, including all backcountry campsites (October 19, 2026).
- The entire Grand Park area and the Northern Loop Trail remain closed until further notice (October 19, 2026).
- No evacuation orders or warnings are in effect for surrounding communities (October 19, 2026).
Impact
Smoke has shrouded the lower northern base of Mount Rainier, creating visible plumes from regional viewpoints such as Kelly Butte Lookout. Backcountry recreation and vehicular access along Sunrise Road remain restricted, but no injuries or structural damage have been reported.
Conditions and Outlook
Cool, overcast weather will persist over the coming days with light winds shifting from easterly to westerly, and precipitation chances increasing toward the weekend. Fire behavior is expected to taper off as the fire reaches sparse fuels along the ridgeline. Park and wildland fire staff will continue monitoring the fire and broader complex while awaiting wetting autumn rains.
Cause and Context
The fire was ignited by a natural lightning strike in the West Fork of the White River drainage and is managed as part of the Wonderland Complex. Park officials anticipate the fire will continue smoldering in remote wilderness until seasonal autumn and winter storms extinguish it.
Official updates current through October 19, 2026.
