Firefighters secure lines near Twin Lakes while managing interior flare-ups

The Little Giant Fire is burning in steep, remote terrain within the Chiwawa River drainage northwest of Leavenworth. Over the last 72 hours, crews completed direct handline construction near Twin Lakes and used aerial water drops to check an interior flare-up near Stormy Mountain, holding dozer lines toward Baldy Mountain. Evacuation notices remain active for surrounding areas while crews work to secure the perimeter and clear hazardous roadside trees.

Evacuations and Closures

• Level 3 (Go Now), Level 2 (Get Set), and Level 1 (Get Ready) evacuation notices remain active for surrounding Chelan County communities (downgraded September 7).
• An Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest closure remains in effect for roads, recreation areas, and trails across the Wenatchee River, Entiat, and Chelan Ranger Districts, alongside a forest-wide campfire ban (effective September 7).
• North Cascades National Park backcountry areas and sections of the Pacific Crest Trail along Agnes Creek remain closed (effective September 7).
• A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place over the fire area, and boaters on nearby waterways must stay near shore to keep aircraft dipping zones clear (effective September 7).

Impact

Smoke columns remain visible from localized burning near Stormy Mountain, Trinity, and the Mad River drainage. Fire-weakened trees along Chiwawa River Road pose hazards to travel routes, while suppression repair operations are underway along Pole Ridge and the Entiat River drainage to mitigate watershed erosion.

Conditions and Outlook

Mild, overcast weather will shift toward cooler conditions with rising humidity and an increasing chance of rain by late weekend. Winds will remain generally out of the west and northwest, though gusty conditions along high ridges may stir activity in unburned interior pockets. Crews plan to finish mop-up operations along the Twin Lakes handline and maintain dozer lines toward Baldy Mountain.

Cause and Context

The fire was started naturally by lightning strikes in mid-July. Northwest Interagency Incident Management Team 12 is in command of suppression and repair efforts across the incident.
