Firefighters build direct lines to protect ranches amid gusty winds

The fire is burning actively through steep timber and grass across the Laramie Range along the Albany and Platte county line, southwest of Wheatland. Over the past few days, torching, running, and spotting prompted overnight firing operations to establish anchor points and direct line construction northward from Government Peak along the Laramie River. The blaze continues to threaten nearby ranches, homes, and critical grazing lands.

Evacuations and Closures

• Residents in the Sybille Fire Zone were advised by Albany County Emergency Management on September 9 to monitor updates and prepare for potential evacuations.
• An emergency area closure went into effect on September 9 across the fire perimeter to prohibit public access.
• Power was shut off across the fire area on September 10 by Wheatland Rural Electric Association to protect emergency responders.
• The public was requested on September 10 to avoid the Wheatland fairgrounds so responders can utilize the facility as an operational base.

Impact

Electric power remains shut off across the fire area for responder safety, and formal structural damage assessments remain delayed due to thick smoke and active burning. Heavy smoke has caused reduced visibility and respiratory and eye irritation in Palmer Canyon, with visible haze spreading eastward toward Torrington.

Conditions and Outlook

Strong, gusty westerly winds are forecast to persist before shifting to the south and easing over the weekend as incoming monsoonal moisture brings improved humidity and a chance of rain. Firefighters plan to continue establishing direct containment lines along the north and west flanks from Government Peak along the Laramie River while scouting indirect control lines in favorable terrain. Aerial resources will continue water and retardant drops to cool active edges and defend ranch infrastructure.

Cause and Context

Lightning ignited the fire on September 7 in the rugged Laramie Range. Multi-agency suppression operations across federal, state, and private lands are being directed by a Wyoming Type 3 Incident Management Team.
