Rain moderates activity while evacuation orders remain along upper Clackamas River
The Austin Fire is burning in dense mixed-conifer timber within the Clackamas River drainage southeast of Estacada. Substantial rainfall over recent days moderated fire behavior to creeping and smoldering in sheltered ground fuels, though falling trees created hazardous conditions along the lines. Evacuation orders remain in effect along the upper Clackamas River corridor as crews maintain structure protection around nearby campgrounds and residential facilities.
Evacuations and Closures
- Level 3 — Go Now evacuation orders remain in effect for residents and areas within the upper Clackamas River corridor (September 6).
- Evacuation levels were reduced around Timothy Lake, permitting Portland General Electric to reopen recreation sites under a strict campfire ban (September 4).
- U.S. Forest Service emergency closure order 06-06-05-26-16 prohibits public entry, road travel, and trail access across designated areas of the Clackamas River Ranger District through December 31, 2026 (September 4).
- Highway 224 remains closed east of Fish Creek, with Timothy Lake access redirected to Highway 26 and Skyline Road (Forest Road 42) (September 4).

The cause of the fire remains under official investigation as of September 5. The incident is managed alongside the Grasshopper Fire by Northwest Complex Incident Management Team 10, with crews tying containment lines directly into the 2020 Riverside Fire burn scar.
