Lines hold and evacuation warnings ease as crews conduct suppression repair

The Hagen Fire is burning in steep terrain within the Umatilla National Forest east of Pendleton. The fire has held within its existing perimeter over the last three days as cool, damp weather moderated fire activity to creeping and smoldering. Firefighters are patrolling containment lines and performing suppression repair, with no immediate threat to surrounding communities.

Evacuations and Closures

• Level 1 'Be Ready' evacuation warnings remain in effect for zone UMC-157-A near Cold Springs along Highway 204, as well as zones UCO-1450 and UCO-1435 in Union County (reduced on September 4).
• Evacuation advisories were lifted on September 4 for zones east and southeast of Weston, including Weston Mountain, Indian Grade Road, Pine Creek Road, Abel Road, and Bingham Road.
• The Level 1 'Be Ready' evacuation warning for zone UMC-121-B north of Highway 204 near Milepost 12 was lifted on September 2.
• An emergency area closure remains in effect across the fire area within the Umatilla National Forest (September 3).
• Phase B Public Use Restrictions are in place across the Umatilla National Forest, restricting campfires, smoking, off-road vehicle travel, and chainsaw use (September 3).
• A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place over the incident area (September 5).

Impact

Light smoke continues to rise from smoldering heavy fuels in the interior, and heavy equipment traffic is active along forest transit routes. No structural damage or injuries have been reported.

Conditions and Outlook

Cloudy skies, cool weather, and chances of rain will persist through the weekend before warmer and drier conditions arrive early next week. Winds will shift westerly with gusty conditions at times before turning easterly and easing. Firefighters plan to patrol the fire perimeter, use thermal imaging to locate interior hot spots, and rehabilitate handlines and dozer tracks.

Cause and Context

The fire was ignited by lightning on July 16, 2026, in steep and rugged terrain. Northwest Complex Incident Management Team 8 assumed operational command of the incident on September 3.
