Crews transition to suppression repair and mop-up as lines hold

The Paradise Fire is burning in remote timber and brush within the Umatilla National Forest, east of Milton-Freewater in Wallowa County. Fire activity remains minimal with creeping and smoldering as firefighters patrol secured lines and shift focus from active suppression to suppression repair. The fire does not currently threaten nearby communities or structures.

Evacuations and Closures

• No evacuation orders or warnings are in effect as of September 9, 2026.
• Emergency forest, road, and trail closures remain in effect across portions of the Umatilla National Forest as of September 7, 2026.
• A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place over the incident area as of September 9, 2026.

Conditions and Outlook

Gustier west-southwest winds are expected through late week with a chance of light drizzle, giving way to cooler conditions and a higher chance of rain over the weekend. Fire behavior is projected to remain minimal, limited to smoldering within heavier interior fuels. Crews plan to continue mop-up, soil stabilization, hazard tree removal, and backhauling unneeded equipment.

Cause and Context

The fire was ignited by lightning on July 16, 2026. Northwest Complex Incident Management Team 8 is managing operations alongside the nearby Hagen Fire as work focuses on long-term watershed and trail restoration.
